for roleplayers with addict muses.

gardenforks:

for the longest time, it has been extremely apparent that many roleplayers are drawn to muses with drug addictions, most of the time the harder the better. this post is to help accurately portray, in particular, the feelings of intravenous drug use. i am a recovering iv addict and in absolutely no way, shape, or form encourage using any of these drugs in any capacity. ever. for any reason. they are horrid, and to write them is one thing, but to truly use is another. please don’t. it just drives me insane when people only further stereotypes because they don’t know what they’re talking about.

ADDICT SLANG.
using drugs in iv form is often referred to as ‘slamming, ‘banging,’ 'blasting,’ 'taking a shot,’ and 'iv-ing.’ rarely is this described as 'shooting up,’ as many people believe.
in addition, needles are usually never called needles or syringes, and are rather spoken about as 'rigs,’ or 'points.’

CRYSTAL METH.
methamphetamine’s crystalline form is commonly known as crystal meth. common slang for this drug most often includes: dope, clear, crystal, tina, and up. meth is an outrageously powerful drug, with a higher high and longer period of intoxication than cocaine. it can be smoked, eaten, snorted, or injected. meth produces a very strong, sweet taste when smoked, and tastes horrific like chemicals when eaten. the use of needles to inject meth is incredibly dangerous, though highly sought after for the ‘head rush’ that is immediate from the moment it enters your blood stream. your pupils dilate rapidly, your heart rate and blood pressure sky rocket. it feels as though everything around you is happening about six times faster than if you were sober. meth will increase your sense of self-confidence to a wicked degree, your inhibitions become none, decision making is extremely skewed and driven by impulse rather than rational thought. the misperception of meth is often the ‘crazies’ who are homeless on the side of the road, have holes in their skin, and speak incoherently with unkempt bodies. more than people realize, many addicts are ‘high-functioning’ on meth to a certain point. while high, or ‘tweaking/twacked,’ it is common for many people to have a twitch, explain the same thing repeatedly in multiple ways (often a lot of people become extremely articulate and speak to a level that is just about profound on meth), move in repetitive ways, pick at acne caused by their use, and speak at a loud volume. // contrary to popular belief in the addict community, you can overdose on meth. an overdose from crystal methamphetamine can come in the form of a fever your body cannot recover from, seizures, brain hemorrhages, cardiac arrest, heart attacks, and strokes.

HEROIN.
heroin comes in many forms, the most common probably being in the form of black tar. common slang for this drug often includes: dope, h, black, dark, and down. this drug is all too popular in the media as of late, as it is becoming increasingly more prevalent. heroin is a form of an opiate, and therefore affects opiate receptors in the brain. the ‘head rush’ from intravenous heroin use is the driving reason behind why it is injected, as it can also be smoked through pipes, bongs, and off of tinfoil. the smell of heroin in any form is typically that of the asphalt being poured on a new road, mixed with a potent vinegar odor- it can also smell like burned cookies. when iv’d, heroin’s head rush often starts at the top middle of the skull, and produces a warmth from that point down through the limbs and remainder of the body. the best description i can make is the feeling of warm honey being poured all over. opiates work to slow down the body, decreasing blood pressure, heart rate, and rate of breathing. similar to methamphetamine is the false sense of greatness heroin generates, though the drug is a ‘downer,’ and generally renders people pretty useless when high. ‘nodding off’ or ‘nodding out’ are often words used to describe someone who is high on heroin. speech slurs, pupils pinpoint, and things move slowly. sounds are muffled, and your reaction times are very much delayed. many addicts will use heroin to come down after taking an upper to sleep or counter-act ‘tweaking.’ when it comes to this drug, i believe the biggest misunderstanding of the sickness that comes with stopping heroin use. one use of heroin will not make you dopesick, though it will make you feel like sick. users who do not have much experience with the drug can often go 8 hours or more without feeling sickness, though the more you use, the more your chances of dope sickness increase. during my addiction, the longest period of time i could last without a shot was about 2.5 hours before i began to feel like i was actually dying. symptoms of being dope sick include: feeling as though your bones are cold, cold sweats, clamminess, headache, and nausea/vomiting. // overdose on heroin is sadly a daily occurrence for many people. blue skin and nails, being unresponsive to stimuli, choking sounds, and inability to feel as though you are taking in enough air are all signs of heroin overdose.

FENTANYL.
fentanyl is rarely used deliberately or knowingly —- it is a synthetic opiate anywhere from 50-100x stronger than heroin. today, fentanyl is being used to 'cut’ heroin, or increase the amount of product by adding fillers for dealers to increase profit. most of the heroin overdoses you hear about in the news happen due to fentanyl. it feels the same way heroin does, though the 'head rush’ is hardly a pleasant one. for me, it produced the 'spins’ you get before you are about to throw up when you get too drunk, and made my body ridiculously hot. the high from fentanyl is very intense but very short-lived, and when taken often will usually stop producing any feeling after 45 minutes or so. addicts who do choose to take fentanyl by their own will most commonly attain it through fentanyl patches sold in pharmacies or with false prescriptions from a doctor.
